Episode 117
Have you ever stopped to think about how you manage the act of acceptance and ownership in your life and relationships?
It seems like a simple question, but when it comes to how we deal with what life rolls by us, they both require a very different practice.
Acceptance as an action is part of how we learn what resonates with us; if we feel in alignment and how we connect with life in a bigger way. It’s the practice of how we dive deeper into our human-ness and shape our inner self. It’s a base behavior that acts as an invisible leader for our heart and quality of life in various ways, including our personal value system and the treatment we are willing to “accept”.
For example, to accept something as a fact or truth is one way we create the value system we use to lead us through life. It can also determine the quality of our experiences and how we relate to others on a personal level.
Acceptance is also a big part of not fighting against the flow of life or the winds of change. It’s not always easy to open to change or accept it, especially when it’s not something we asked for in the first place.
At the same time, we may also accept things that reflect our ability to value ourselves as worthy and worth it. When we’ve accepted we are less than or don’t deserve love, appreciation or joy, we can easily miss the good right in front of our nose.
Ownership is a practice that helps us hone our humanness in a different way.
It’s not always easy to “own” our crap, how we’ve hurt others, or step up into our true selves and power.
At times we can also take ownership of how others perceive us as our “fault”, or perhaps be unwilling to look deeper into our heart and soul to see what we won’t own as ours. Instead we blame and point the finger at others, or project our feelings onto them, as if it’s all their fault.
See – two simple words with very powerful, yet different, impacts in practice!
On the latest episode of the Flirting With Enlightenment podcast, I talk about why it’s important to clearly see the ways we approach acceptance and ownership and how it shapes, or has been shaped by, our value system. I also shed light on why the way we practice acceptance and ownership reveals how we may be holding ourselves back, or keeping us from seeing where we need to grow.
Every single one of us has emotions to manage, but they are not something we can easily see or step into sometimes. As feelings bubble up, it’s easy to take ownership of them, then push them down as not valid, or to take on emotions that are not ours, for example. I’m pretty sure my fellow empaths out there know exactly what I mean!
At the same time, our personal ability to own a fact about ourselves, a feeling, or a sense of confusion can put us in a state of denial or suspension. Then we get into mental tizzy about the “why” and waste a lot of time trying to fix ourselves, rather than tune in and listen to our truth.
There are many ways this can play out – these are just some of the ways our human brains can get in the way of us connecting with the truth of a situation.
On the podcast, I also share a deeper perspective and some simple ways you can navigate acceptance and ownership in your day to day life.

I just stumbled on your podcast and this episode, by searching “inner wisdom” this morning in Overcast, a new podcast player I have been using instead of itunes.
I don’t think anything so far on my 10 year self-discovery journey has resonated so deeply with me!
So much of what you talked about spoke directly to things I’ve been reflecting on in recent weeks.
I simply wanted to reply and let you know how thankful I am for having discovered your work and how much it resonated with me. Plus, I am super excited that your work is current. (so many times I come upon older things that the creator has moved on from) I have subscribed and will be looking forward to future episodes!
